Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities
by Mark L. Sundberg and James W. Partington
Most children with autism or other developmental disabilities experience severe language delays or disorders. Teaching language to these children can be quite a challenge to parents and professionals. This book presents a state-of-the-art language assessment and intervention program based on B.F. Skinner's behavioral analysis of language, and the extensive body of empirical research that supports Skinner's analysis.
The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (The ABLLS)
by James W. Partington and Mark L. Sundberg.
The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (The ABLLS) is an assessment, curriculum guide, and skills tracking system for children with language delays. The ABLLS contains a task analysis of the many skills necessary to communicate successfully and to learn from everyday experiences. The ABLLS is comprised of two separate documents: The ABLLS Scoring Instructions and IEP Development Guide (The ABLLS Guide), and The ABLLS Protocol that is used to record scores for each child. The ABLLS Guide is available separately, but The ABLLS Protocol is available only as part of the introductory two-book set (The ABLLS Guide plus The ABLLS Protocol), and to registered owners of The ABLLS Guide.

Kaufman Speech Praxis Materials
http://www.kidspeech.com/ksp.htmlNancy Kaufman has been treating children with apraxia of speech since 1979. She realized that existing materials were just not quite right for the methods she found most effective. So....she designed her own materials for both evaluation and treatment.

Another well published Behavior Analyst who is known for his brilliant books and workshops is Dr Bobby Newman, PhD , BCBA. He is a wonderful presenter and writer who through his books and presentations disseminates fundamental behavioral principles with a wonderful style. HE is brilliant and comical all in the same breath. IF you ever have a chance to hear him speak , we would suggest you do so.

Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) Dr Steven Gutstein:

Website: THE CONNECTIONS CENTER
Heroic parents, desperately search for a peer who will accept and play with their son or daughter with Autism, Aspergers, PDD and NVLD. They dream that an understanding friend will serve as the crucial relationship bridge, opening the social world for their child. Inevitably, they come face-to-face with a sad truth. You cannot acquire friends as if they were objects or possessions. And you cannot place a child with severe social deficits in a normal setting and expect he will understand the subtle signals of friendship through osmosis. Until recently, there were few alternatives to the prayers and dreams of parents and family that somehow, someway, they would find an alternative to the general medical expectations; that their child's condition would most likely result in a life apart from others. After years of clinical practice, teaching and research, Dr. Steven Gutstein and Dr. Rachelle Sheely were unwilling to accept these bleak predictions. They believed that people in the Autism spectrum could become true partners in authentic relationships. But, only through an intervention program designed to fit their unique style of learning. Relationship Development Intervention, RDI, is the result of their persistent efforts to open the world of joy, excitement and unity found in authentic relationships, to persons in the Autism spectrum.* Through RDI, there is a path to emotionally fulfilling lives for thousands of children, adolescents and adults facing lonely, isolated futures.
SOME BOOKS BY DR GUTSTEIN & Rachelle K. Sheely
Solving the Relationship Puzzle
A Groundbreaking Developmental Program that Opens the Door to Lifelong Social & Emotional Growth for Persons with Autism, Aspergers Syndrome & PDD" Steve Gutstein, psychologist and autism specialist, sought to discover why children with autism lack the social skills that come so easily to the rest of us. The result of his efforts is an innovative program - Relationship Development Intervention - that take social skills teaching to the next level. You'll learn about the social development pathway of the nondisabled child and the life-changing detour taken by children on the autism spectrum. However, instead of leaving you there, Autism/Aspergers: Solving the Relationship Puzzle describes ways to steer children with autism onto a bright new path of self discovery and social awareness, one that will ultimately bring them home to meaningful friendships, shared emotions and heartfelt connection with the people in their lives. It's an important new book in the autism field.

Relationship Development Intervention with Young Children: Social and Emotional Development Activities for Asperger Syndrome, Autism, PDD and NLD
Friendship, even for the most able, requires hard work, and the odds are heavily stacked against those with autism spectrum disorders. Designed for younger children, typically between the ages of two and eight, this comprehensive set of activities emphasizes foundation skills such as social referencing, regulating behavior, conversational reciprocity and synchronized actions. The authors include over 300 objectives to plan and evaluate a child's progress, each one related to a specific exercise. Suitable for parental use, the manual is also designed for easy implementation in schools and in therapeutic settings. A comprehensive website acts as companion to the book, free to purchasers.
Relationship Development Intervention with Children, Adolescents and Adults: Social and Emotional Development Activities for Asperger Syndrome, Autism, PDD and NLD
Remove our emotional bonds with family, colleagues and friends and few of us would want to go on living. Yet establishing and maintaining such bonds is particularly difficult for people on the autism spectrum. This volume contains over 200 activities and exercises ranging over the entire gamut of social and emotional development, and is applicable to anyone, regardless of diagnosis, but will be particularly valuable for those on the autism spectrum. Activities can be undertaken independently, or with a teacher or therapist, and a full schema for the evaluation of progress and objectives is included. A companion website provides a wealth of further information and support.

WORKSHOPS
Of course we suggest anything we host! Check out our CONFERENCE page
We ALSO like to strongly suggest to parents who are implementing an Applied Behavior Analysis approach to attend one of Dr. Vincent Carbone's Workshop's

Dr Carbone's workshops will leave you with not only an effective way of teaching LANGUAGE and having a fine understanding of Verbal Behavior (based on B.F. Skinners Analysis of Verbal Behavior), you will leave with a tremendous understanding of APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS as a WHOLE Science.

Dr Carbone is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who relies on the literature of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to guide his treatment and instructional recommendations for children with autism.
